Something about fall fashion brings out the blogger in me. Fall fashion will always hold a place in my heart because I think it’s one of the more versatile seasons where you can really enjoy dressing up. But every closet needs a few essentials that really help to tie all the looks together, so I’m breaking down 10 fall clothing essentials that your closet needs this season.
This is one of those “non negotiables” in my opinion. A black leather boot is quintessential to your fall closet and can virtually work with any outfit. And there are SO many options to choose from: knee high, over the knee, calf high, bootie, patent, croc. Honestly, there is something for everyone. If you’re simply trying to take the step to add the essentials to your closet, adding a black boot is definitely a first step.
I have another blog post detailing some cute black boots for this season here.
I love black jeans. They are sleek, can go with everything, and can be dressed up or down. Black jeans work great with all my cooler toned pieces. But gray jeans have also been having their moment lately and I think it’s a great way to slightly deviate from the usual. The color actually pairs well with all your usual fall colors, but also works well with brighter tones.
If you’ve been keeping up with me for some time either on here or on social media, you’d know by now that I have an affinity to a great white button up. I currently have about 6 different iterations of this style of top because I just love it so much. Whether you’re going for a cropped style, oversized, or traditional fit, this is a piece that you’ll find yourself gravitating to frequently.
Back in December 2022, I was influenced to splurge on a pair of Gucci loafers. And because it was an item that I knew I could easily incorporate into my wardrobe, it made the purchase more justifiable. While you don’t need to splurge, you definitely want to have the option between a loafer or a ballet flat for your more casual days.
Another no brainer. This is one of those items you can choose to splurge on because it’s something you’ll be gravitating towards as the temps drop. The chunky knits are perfect for end of fall and through winter, and “lightweight” knits can work for fall and early spring. Either way, you’re going to want to have both styles in your arsenal. I love chunky knit cardigan that I wore in this video (gifted) because it provides a comfortable level of warmth and be worn on its own or layered underneath a coat.
If you’re wanting to be more intentional about elevating your wardrobe, a wide leg or relaxed pair of slacks will do just that. Besides the comfortable factor, a tailored slack is very versatile for dressing up or down and has the additional benefit of being able to layer a pair of thicker leggings or tights underneath for some extra warmth.
Another non negotiable! This is a piece that easily elevates an outfit. It works with everything. And I do mean everything. You can play around with silhouettes by cinching the waist or going for a general oversized look by keeping it buttoned. I have many blazers in my close that, again, serve different purposes, but I find myself gravitating towards the slightly oversized ones the most.
I love a fitted turtleneck because I consider it both a layering piece and something that can be worn on it’s own. Black is always a sure choice for me because I can make it work with any look. One way to style this as a layering piece is with a white button up, slightly oversized blazer, a wide leg pant, and loafers for a casual look that still feels elevated (and comfortable).
A knit dress is a great alternative if you’re wanting to go for something other than pants but aren’t necessarily wanting to wear a skirt. Depending on the thickness, you can cinch the waist with your favorite belt, creating some dimension to the look, or go for a more fitted option that gives you the flexibility with layering. Pair it with your favorite pair of tights and knee high boots for a classic and chic look.
And finally, a coat! Depending on the region you’re in, the trench coat is one you can get away with wearing throughout the entire fall season by just incorporating a few additional layers. If you’re in colder climates, a wool coat is going to be your bestie this season. Whether you have one solid one, or a few to pair with different looks, this is another non negotiable to have in your wardrobe this season.
There we have it! The 10 fall clothing essentials that your closet needs this season! I promise with these pieces, you’ll be able to mix and match and create endless looks and wave goodbye to the “I don’t have anything to wear” narrative.
Until next time…
