Inviting God into your everyday life can sometimes feel easier said than done. Making the effort to acknowledge Him in everything you do can feel a bit taxing when you start to overthink it. But doing so has allowed me to keep my head above water when I feel the waves of grief, loneliness, sadness, and depression crashing in. There are moments that are simply beyond my control and understanding and in those moments, seeking God and hearing His voice is essential for me.
With that said, below are 4 easy ways to invite God into your life everyday. Don’t put pressure on yourself. I look at these things like I do working out. You’re building a muscle. Some days you don’t want to do it, but when you do, you feel great after.
Every morning, I get an email devotional from Faith Getaway. Email is the first thing I check in the morning so it makes it convenient. Some are short and sweet. Others are little bit longer to read through. I try to read them every morning. Sometimes, I don’t. But this is a great way to start your day and allow His presence to guide your actions. Another devotional I like reading is Jesus Calling by Sarah Young (may she rest in Heavenly peace). This is one that I have found myself going back to time and time again because it’s written in the 1st person voice of Jesus. So it feels like He is speaking directly to you.
Breath prayers are those that you can say in about 5 sec or less while doing deep breathing exercises. Things like “Thank you Lord for today”, “Be with me today”, “Order my steps”. Taking just 5 secs to utter these words throughout the day allows you to open your heart (something I am working to do more actively). When I am faced with an unpleasant situation, I give myself a moment to vent my frustrations and annoyance, even in prayer. I follow up with, “Lord give me the strength to process this” and this has helped me to regulate my emotions better.
Most days, I find myself taking some time to listen to a few Gospel songs while I’m working, or on the way to an event. It helps me center my mind in the midst of a busy work day. Spotify is great for building out playlists that cater to your musical interests. And they also curate playlist based on what genres you listen to. If you’re an Apple Music subscriber, you can easily make playlist and find playlist that fit your fancy. This is a great way to easily invite God in and you’ll start to feel a shift in how you feel.
I am finally hopping on the podcast train and I realized it is such a good way to listen to sermons and such while on your way to work, or to a meeting, or to an event. It’s also a great way to listen while you may be doing other tasks, like cooking or cleaning. It’s a good way to start or end your day, and easy to do.
I hope that if you are wanting to build your relationship with God, you’ll be open to trying these out!
Until next time…
