Staple pieces in your closet are items that can be worn in different ways according to your own personal style. What is a staple to one person may not be to another, and that’s the beauty (and fun) of fashion styling. But I am a strong believer that everyone should have their own personal staple pieces in their closet, especially for those “I don’t know what to wear” moments.
For the 1st quarter of this year, I am going on a no buy hiatus (or fast, whichever fits your fancy). No new clothes, shoes, or accessories until April. This will be somewhat of a challenge, solely because I enjoy finding new pieces to incorporate into my wardrobe. But this will also allow me to really flex my styling skills, be more intentional about wearing (and rewearing) the things I already own, and allow me to save a good amount of money to put towards some other goals I have. And this is where having staple pieces comes into play.
Step by Step Guide on Putting Together an Outfit
I feel confident enough to embark on this journey because I have staple pieces that fit my own personal style already. So I always have something to wear. Always. And if I say that I don’t, I’m just being extremely picky. Take for example this look in this post. This is a culmination of older and some slightly newer pieces featuring three staple pieces: a blazer, a pair of slacks, an ankle boot, and a black shoulder bag.
The blazer is an old one from H&M that will always remain in my closet until it starts to fall apart, and even then, there’s nothing that a good tailor can’t fix. The pants are from a black owned brand Reona that I picked up towards the end of 2021. Slacks are one of those pieces that truly don’t go out of style (for me) and always makes me feel elevated with any look I style with them. The boots are from NAKD Fashion and have been a favorite since I’ve got them (unfortunately they are sold out). I love that they can be worn with basically any look and adds an extra level of edge to it. And finally this shoulder bag from Brandon Blackwood is one that I picked up in October and have been wearing non stop. All of these I consider staple pieces because they can be reworked in so many different ways.
A couple other staple pieces for me include:
Slip Skirt, Straight Leg Jeans, Knee High Boots, White Button Up, Crop Top variation, Denim Jacket, Leather Mini Skirt, Leather Pants, Linen Pants, White Tshirt variation, Pleated Midi Skirt, Denim Skirt.
So as you take stock of your closet in the first few months of this year, I highly encourage you to take a look to see if you have staple pieces that are true to you, and how those pieces are able to be styled in different ways. This will aid in streamlining your shopping process. Because you’re not just shopping for the sake of shopping (even though that’s very fun to and it has it’s place and time), but shopping to enhance what’s already there.
